Melty Vegan Cheese with Agar
Ingredients:
- 2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 1/4 cup tapioca starch
- 2 tablespoons agar agar flakes
- 2 tablespoons refined coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder optional, for color
Instructions:
Nut milk, agar agar flakes, coconut oil, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and turmeric powder if using should all be mixed together in a saucepan using a whisk
Set the pan on medium heat and whisk the mixture all the time as you bring it to a simmer
Once the mixture starts to simmer, turn down the heat to low and keep whisking for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until the mixture gets thicker and the agar agar flakes are gone
Put the mixture into a mold or a shallow dish that has been lined with parchment paper
Use a spatula to smooth the top of the mixture
After letting the cheese cool for about 30 minutes at room temperature, put it in the fridge to chill for at least two hours, or until it is firm
To make slices, take the cheese out of the mold or dish once its hard
Put any leftovers in a container that wont let air in and put it in the fridge
